“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth.” (Proverbs 11:30, 31)
In 1967 Geert and I heard Corrie ten Boom telling her life story and it changed our life radically. We began to believe in and love the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We want to share with you some things from her story.
In 1844 Corrie’s grandfather started a weekly prayer group in his house for the Jewish people. Exactly 100 years later, on February 28th 1944, the Nazis invaded this house and put Corrie, her father, her sister and other members of the Ten Boom family in prison. The reason for this was because their house was packed with Jews!! At the moment of the invasion four Jews escaped and six Jews slipped into the “Hiding Place”, a secret place where the Nazis could not find them and so they survived.Father Ten Boom, who was 84 years old, died in prison. Corrie’s sister died in Ravensbrück concentration camp, but Corrie survived Ravensbrück in a miraculous way. After the war she went on caring for Jewish Holocaust survivors. She travelled all over the world to tell her story and more then a million copies of her book “The Hiding Place” have been given out in many languages. A tree was planted in Corrie’s memory in Jerusalem’s memorial centre, Yad Vashem, and she is called “a Tsadika”.
One day God told her to go back to Germany and tell the Germans what had happened to her and her family. One evening something special happened: a former camp guard of Ravensbrück, who recognized Corrie, came up to her and asked forgiveness for the things he had done to her and her sister. For Corrie it was very, very difficult and she wanted to think about it for one night. Corrie loved the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob wholeheartedly and therefore she knew that she had to forgive. The next day she went to the camp guard to forgive him and shook hands with him.
Bless the Jewish people
Like Corrie, I am from Haarlem and I already knew that two single aunts of mine had helped Corrie to bring Jewish babies from one address to another. In 1995 Hans Poley, a resistance fighter who survived because he had been sheltered in the “Hiding Place”, finally wrote a book about what exactly had happened to him and the other five Jews, who were hidden. To my astonishment and joy I read in the book, that my grandfather had built that “Hiding Place”. Later, God told my husband and me to bless the Jewish people too, because of what is written in Genesis 12:3: “I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”.
